That’s actually how we make “refried” beans in Honduras- by simmering them until they thicken. They’re only really called refried to imply re-cooked, because you cook them twice. Once by boiling the dried beans, and then the second time by blending and simmering down. Same seasoning too.. that’s a good shortcut by using canned beans, but you can make them from dried by putting the ingredients in a pressure cooker. You can add some chopped yellow or white onion instead of the green. I’d say that’s a pretty authentic recipe.

That’s good to know! Everything I kept reading said refried beans were fried once, but never ‘refried’ so I hesitated to make the reference!
